Strauss Metamorphosen
Beethoven Symphony no. 3 in Eb major (‘Eroica’)

Nicholas Collon conductor
Tom Service
presenter

No symphony pulses more vigorously with the rhythms of political protest than Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’, whose defiant opening chords mark the arrival of the Romantic symphony. For this special performance as part of Cambridge Summer Music Festival, Aurora harnesses the remarkable potential of memorised performance to get under the skin of this groundbreaking work, with Radio 3’s Tom Service and Nicholas Collon presenting.  The concert opens with Richard Strauss’s 1945 Metamorphosen. Scored for 23 solo strings, this ecstatic, elegiac work closes with an ‘Eroica’ quotation that mourns the devastation brought about by another, even darker, political regime.
