20th July / Southbank Centre Central Bar Foyer / 1pm
From the sublime to the virtuosic, Max Baillie (violin) and Sura Susso (kora) present a mix of Baroque and West African music including pieces by Lully, Merula, and centuries-old African bardic spirituals.
Having met in Senegal in 2005, Max and Sura struck up a fast friendship and discovered a unique musical chemistry with one another. In mixing their respective string traditions they were able to tap into each others’ styles with their shared imaginative improvisational flair, and have been playing concerts together ever since. In their own right they both lead busy performance careers engaged in a range of projects and groups which have taken them to stages at major festivals in the UK including Womad, Glastonbury, and from major London venues to as far afield as Moscow, Sydney and New York.
